94 Escort (standard) Just got Timing Belt and Alternator belt changed.?

No bent valves, wires good, but timing is off. After he put belt on, I drove it and it stared %26quot;jumping%26quot; a little and when it is on idle the muffler spits and the engine shakes. He said he will have to re-do it because he put the timing in the middle, maybe thats not the right way. Either or he said I can drive it in the meantime this week but people are telling me not to drive it when the timing is off. Any suggestions on whats wrong with it and if I could drive it? Thank you so much in advance

The TIMING BELT is not %26quot;off%26quot; or the engine would not be running, however the TIMING is off and yes the vehicle should not be driven. It sounds like he put the belt on one tooth off. The with the timing off the engine will knock and could even backfire, this is not good for the internals of the engine.
i would,nt be driving that way. that would be hard on the valves. what,s wrong with him? probably what happened was when he was putting the timing belt on, the cam turned with him.there should be a gage hole in the cam sprocket to put something in to keep it from turning while putting the belt on.
The timong belt is off and shouldn't be driven. If you drive it. you will do harm to the engine.
