The Belt on my alternator won't stay on, anyone know why??

i just bought a 94 honda accord ex for cheap. When I purchased it, it wouldnt turn over. The belts were popped off and when i tried to put them back on the belt on the alternator kept coming off. Could this be why my car doesnt start?? Also i just changed the spark plugs. Is there any advise someone can give me??

the belt is stretched, get a new one, and thats wouldn't be the reason the car won't start.

the belts prolly need replacing. yes that may be why its not starting. Go to a mechanic.
Sounds like the bracket is bent causing the pulley to be out of alignment. If so, you're in for a lot of work.
The belts are either stretched, or tensioned wrong, or one of the bearings they turn on is bad.
one of the pulleys the belt runs on is out of alignment.....
you need to make sure you have the right size belt for the alternator, and that it is tightened aslo make sure you have the right spark plugs and that they are gapped for that vehicle
You could tighten it or its stripped which means you need a new one
The belt tensioner could be sprung or wore out or the belt could be the wrong size. And yes that is why your car won't start. Check the alignment of your pulleys to be sure that your belt is running true. If they are not, you have found your problem.
spark plugs have nothing to do w/ it!!! You may have the wrong belt on the car i.e. a 5 ribbed belt on a 4 ribbed pulley. They may just not be tensioned correctly, and like the other answers, the alt pulley or idler pulley may be out of alignment. Put the belt back on, start the car and see where on which pulley the belt begins to ride off. And check that the belt has the correct ribs by counting the top of the rib on pulley, then count the low rib in the belt to make sure they are matching flush.
Check the condition of the belts. If they are not torn cracked or kinked put the belt back on. Look down across the belts and see if the look like they are running straight. Also how much tention is on the belt when it is on the car? It should be snug but do not make it so tight that it streches and twangs like a stringed instrument. Is the tentioner keeping the belt tight. be careful!!!
Your alternator pretty much supplies electrical power to the vehicle once its spinning. The alternator belt is usually driven by the crank pulley. So yes, it would cause a starting issue.

Now for the belt. There might be a spacer on the alternator mounting that is missing. Without the spacer, it would cause belt to get off track when in gear. Or it could be that the belt is the wrong type belt. Best to look around a service mannual for your model vehicle. It will should show you how the alternator should be mounted and what parts mount it together.
