How can i change an alternator belt on 97 dodge neon sport dohc, kind of puzzling?

Well I have never done this on a Neon you should be able to find a bolt thea removes the tension on the alternator. There maybe another pulley that does the same thing it%26#039;s a very simple job but the belt may be difficult to get off, so be forceful.|||Go to a garage.. Easiest way!!

SHE IS ALL YOURS!!!|||It sounds like your battery isn%26#039;t holding a charge (as you stated in your title) It may read on your battery tender that it is charged but it doesn%26#039;t last under a load. Take it to an auto parts store and ask them to load test the battery. With all likeliness they will find the battery to be bad and you will need a new one.|||First go to the auto parts store and have your charging system check along with your battery. You question does not have enough information to make any kind of right answer. I bet after your trip to the parts house you will have your answer.|||1st. dont use ur radio sing to urself. 2nd when it rains poke ur head out the window. 3rd buy urself a torch and sticky tape it to ur bonnet.|||Your battery should read 12 volts with the engine off. Turning on the headlights, it should maintain a full 12 volts.

Anything less indicates a cell maybe shorted out.

when you start the car, the voltage reading should be 13.5 volts, the extra 1.5 volts needed to overcome the internal resistance of the battery.

take it to the auto parts store. Most of them can check the charging system on the vehicle. It is not uncommon for the battery to die at the same time that the alternator goes out.

How do you change the alternator belt on a '97 nissan sentra, how do you adjust the belt's tension?

Some cars belt set ups are very aggravating My suggestion is to go to Advance or Auto zone and get a book on that car and year this will also answer many other problems in the future . That is one of the first things I have always done on every car I have ever owned . It has always been a great investment . To explian all the things that needs to be done and the litte things to look for whuold take way to long to type the information in right now .|||loosen the alternator bolts and pry the alternator toward engine block with a screw driver(dont break anything) and slide belt off and put on new 1.....to tighten(adjust belt)u pull/pry alternator away from engine block and tighten bolts back up(some models may have a bolt that tightens belt for u jsut by tightening bolt)|||First off, if you are not aware, theres a diagram of the proper placement of the belt around all the points of contact. One of the points of contact is movable, but takes quite a few pounds of pressure to move it, which is why this is easier with two people. (I changed mine myself, by standing on the frame of the car) So basically find the movable one and get something that wont bend, like a long handled wrench (Yes they do make a tool for this but its not needed) that you%26#039;ll use to apply pressure to move it. Once you have the belt on properly you%26#039;ll see it just barely too small to get around the last point of contact, but applying pressure to the movable one will give you more slack, and then you can slide it over the last point of contact.

Like i said, it much easier with two people. Good :Luck!|||Wow, you have picked one of the most difficult belts out there to chane. Changing the belt and adjusting the tension go hand in hand. You will have to adjust the tension very loose to get off the old belt and put on the new. Than adjust the tension back up. Usually the alternator is the pulley that moves. You will have 1 or 2 bolts facing the wheel well that hold the alternator in place, and one that faces either straight up, straight down, or to the front of the car that you spin repeatedly to loosen the belt. If the alternator does not seem to have any extra bolts on it there will be another pulley just for adjusting tension. If it is this one you will have to jack up the car and access it from underneath. Look for a belt diagram under the hood and see if it shows you the tensioner. Similar set up as the alternator adjustments, one or two bolts that will have to be loosened( not removed, only loose) and then a main bolt that adjusts the tension (again none of these bolts should be removed, all should only be loosened).

How to loosen an Alternator Belt on a 1991 Chevy Corsica?

I am trying to change my alternator but I cant figure out how to loosen the belt.|||There is a tensioner. It looks like an arm with a smooth pulley on it that does not look to serve any purpose. Put a wrench on the nut on the tensioner and push to the right it is basically a big spring.

Good luck|||there is a belt tensioner all you need to do is rent the serpentine belt tool its a long rod and you can have it on an angle to loosen it up enough and have someone take the belt off or just stick a 3/8 rachet down there to listen it up and it should be easy enough to lift up and take it off|||Every car has a tensioner. Look at all the pulleys on the belt it should be a smaller one with hole in the middle. If you take a 3/8 inch ratchet it should fit in that hole. You push that down with a lot of pressure and you%26#039;ll see the belt loosen on the rest of the pulleys. Sometimes it takes two people as you have to push down really hard for some cars and while you push down the other person has to slide the belt off the pulleys. Good luck

Help, Im in the middle of repairing my 1994 escort in the rain, changed the alternator now belt squeaks?

I think the belt tensioner may be positioned wrong and thier is no diagram under the hood. does any1 have a solution to this or know where i can find a diagram to double check. ive searched all on line. its a `994 ford escort lx 1.9|||If the old belt looks like crap then change it. While you are at the parts store you can look at one of the repair manuals on the shelf. Before you put on the new belt make sure you spin all the pulley wheels so you know that one of them isn%26#039;t binding up.

Why the he-- didnt you draw a diagram??|||Replace the belt and check alignment of tensioner too.|||Make sure you have the belt tight enough if that doesnt fix it the while its running carefully rub a bar of soap or a candle on the side that touches the pullys.|||remember the flat backside off the belt, will run against smooth or flat surface idler pulleys. the tension of the idler pulley should be against the back side of the belt, and pushing down against it. also you have have gotten a little grease or such on the belt, and its trying to slip a little. car washing it will take care of that, but check your belt makes sure it is not fraid or has cracks internally, it may need replaced also.

Changing my alternator. Do I need a new belt?

The belt is in great condition, but I%26#039;m installing a high--output alternator that has an overdrive pulley that has six ribs. My current belt will fit in/over four of the ribs, but I want to know if it is necessary to seek out a wider belt that has 6 ribs. Will it make that much of a difference if I keep the existing belt on there? Thanks.|||Yes its better to put a new one with the exact size for your new alternator. Your old belt could start a new problem in the future. Hope this helps!|||oh yes, it will make a difference. that alternator and that pully will have a ton more drag than your stock alternator, so if you use the stock belt that%26#039;s only 2/3s the width needed, it%26#039;s going to slip and squeel like crazy, and the alternator won%26#039;t put out the right voltage. you need to get a 6 rib drive pully and a 6 rib belt to go with it.|||If your original belt has four ribs this means the crank shaft pulley has four ribs. A six rib belt will not fit over the crank shaft pulley. It sounds like you will need to change the pulley on the alternator from a six rib to a four rib. If you use a four rib belt on a six rib pulley the belt may wear out to quickly.|||no you dont need a new one. the amount of ribs on the pulley has nothing to do with the alternator. it has to do with the amount of ribs on the crank and or waterpump pulley. so even if you did get a new wider belt. it wouldnt fit on your crank pulley. so yes the stock one will do. just make sure u line it up on the right ribs, if you dont, your going to hear a light scraping/squeeking noise. because the belt will be slightly slipping.|||the belt rides on more than just the alternator

if the crankshaft pulley only has 4 ribs you can not use the 6 rib belt

you are better off using the belt you have

you should have transferred the pulley from your old alt to the new one

Jim|||Is your crank pulley 4, then you can%26#039;t put a 6 ribbed belt on a 4 ribbed pulley.

Beside that point, don%26#039;t you need a longer belt to use with the overdrive pulley.|||yah it might be safe to put the new belt on incase if u put the old one back it might slipe off or start to tare up|||it is not Necessary to change the belt|||You could use the original but I would play safe with a correct width new belt.

What tools and how do you change the alternator belt in a 1999 kia sephia?

It depends, if it has an %26#039;auto-tensioner%26#039; (spring loaded pulley, hydraulic, etc), and usually a serpentine belt, you may just need a 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet/breaker bar. Just relieve the tension off the belt, slip off and slip new one on.

If it has V-belts then they are individually tensioned. Which you would have to adjust tension yourself. But be careful about not over tightening the belt, otherwise ruined bearings would result.

a craftsman tool kit will suffice.|||if u have to ask then maybe u shud just skip the questions and go to a mechanic, just a thought.|||Use a socket driver and a pipe over the handle. This way you have leverage to turn the auto tensioner. Then remove the belt and install a new serpantine belt around the same way the old one comes off. Just lift the belt off with one hand while holding the tensioner open. This is pretty much the same on any car from the 80%26#039;s 90%26#039;s and newer.|||You should not need any really. There is a pulley that has a spring tension and to relieve the tension you can use a broom stick in a pinch.

Look on the front under the hood there will be a little picture of how the belt goes around the round pulleys.

Its really pretty simple.

Me, I would replace the belt and on the last pulley (the alt or a/c compressor) I would use a screw driver to help get it about half on .....then I would turn the motor over a bit and it will POP into place like Magic!|||go to auto zone ask for a 1999 Kia. How do I know if I need to change the alternator, alternator belt, battery or all of the above?

It should be ideally 14.4 volts but 14 range is good. If the voltage on the battery is drastically under 12 volts the suspect is the battery. if it is under 14 then it is likely the alternator or the voltage regulator, or even a loose alternator belt as stated. If you do not have a multitester you can go to a checker shucks cragan and have them check the battery and alternator, they will test them for free. Another thing to check is for your battery cables and terminals to be in good shape tight and clean. i hope this helps.....|||Auto zone will test your alternator and battery for free ( perk of their biz to bring in customers ) If it runs fine when its already started then the alternator is working, if it doesnt hold a charge or has a hard time turning over and starting then its the battery. the belt wont affect any of these unless if it was off but you can look at it and see if its worn ( any fread edges or missing peices) |||If you are saying that if you jump it it will starts right up, then one of two things are bad.....battery or starter. http://www.amazon.com/Summit-SUM-900035-鈥?/a>|||It requires a serpentine belt tool. first take note of the routing of the belt, raise the car up and remove the shield covering the crank pulley, put a 19mm socket on the tool, find the tensioner toward the top of the engine, put the tool on the fixed tensioner casting (its a 19mm hex cast right into the tensioner) (do this from the bottom) and pull down. this will take the tension off the belt and allow you to slip the belt off the waterpump pulley. let the bar go back up and the whole belt will fall off. replacing is reverse, its tricky the first time......even the second or third. good luck! oh and dont try to drive it to the repair shop if you cant get it back on.....the waterpump wont be working so you%26#039;ll risk engine damage by overheating, the power steering wont work, the battery wont charge, and as if it matters...the A/C wont work either!

How do you properly change out the alternator belt on a 1996 Toyota T100?

If anyone has a diagram of exactly what bolts are needed to loosen to change this belt out, it would be much appreciated. Unfortunately, I have to take out all the belts to change this belt, but I don%26#039;t want to mess it up.|||There should be a tensioner pulley you pull back to release the belt. tryin to change my alternator belt on my 92 dx but i cant find the tensioner to loosen the drive belt so i cant put the alternator belt behind it is it behind the timing belt cover|||the car may not have a tensioner, you may have to loosen the alternator bolts and the alternator would move. Then you would have to pry on the alternator to tighten belt when it comes to installation.|||Behind the lower mounting bolt, aimed at the firewall you should find a 6mm bolt (10mm head) coming thru a block that the lower bolt goes thru. Loosen that off and you should be able to swing the alternator down and remove the belt.|||did you look on one of the pullies?

How do I change the alternator belt in an 87 Suburban?

The old one snapped while driving. Will I need a belt tensioner? It shouldn%26#039;t be too hard, but I can%26#039;t figure out what I need to loosen to get the new one on. Will I need to remove the fan belt to get the alternator belt on? Any advice would be really helpful.|||I get a kick out of these kids who think that every vehicle ever made has one single Serpentine belt. They probably couldn%26#039;t adjust a set of points if they were stranded in the Yukon and their life depended on it.

You will need to remove any belts that are mounted in front of the Alternator belt. As far as the Alternator, those are easy. There are 2 bolts holding it in, one short one, and one long one, The long one is the one the Alternator pivots on. The short one keeps it from pivoting by locking it in place, although both should be tightened when you are done. Just loosen both, and push the Alternator towards the engine.

You probably have at least a Power Steering belt in front, and usually if you have Air Conditioning, that will be in the back on yours, if I remember correctly. Either of those are usually a little more complicated, as they have more than 2 bolts you have to loosen. The Power Steering has one on the back (a nut actually) that a lot of people don%26#039;t notice.

Here are some pictures that might help;

Notice that the Power Steering has 3 bolts right in front of the pump, but those hold the pump to the bracket, so leave those alone. You want to loosen the 2 nuts/bolts towards the engine side, that hold the bracket to the engine, and the one in back, and move the pump and front bracket at the same time. The back bracket doesn%26#039;t move like the front one does.

To get the belt off all the way, you will have to get it over the fan, which is easiest if you start on one side of the fan, and work your way towards the other side of the fan, one blade at a time. Put the new belts back over the fan the same way, except in reverse.

Once you get all the belts in place and on the pulleys, you need to move the device back away from the engine to tighten the belt. Be careful with the Power Steering especially, when using a pry bar, as the outside is the fluid reservoir. That bends easily, and can cause a leak if you do bend it.

Once you get the belt tight enough, tighten one of the lockdown bolts, which are mounted over a slot. Then tighten the rest, including the pivot bolts. Start the engine up, making sure that no one else is standing by the front of the car, and make sure they%26#039;re still on and tight after you shut the engine off.|||You don%26#039;t need to loosen anything. There should be a drawing of the belt route on the fan shrout. It should have picture of where the belt go. All you need is 3/4%26quot; socket and a long breaker bar.

1. You route all the belt to all the parts it is suppose to, power steering, a/c, alternator, main pulley, smog pump and of course the tensioner is last.

2. You stick the socket on the tensioner bolt and pull onto it while placing the belt over the tensioner.

Once the belt is on the tensioner, you are done! Making sure the belt go onto the other part properly. You can then start the engine.|||you only need a new belt tensioner if the old one has no tension on it or it vibrates too much when the engine is running, you will need either a 3/8 or 1/2 breaker bar, the tensioner arm will have a square hole to place the bar socket into, use the bar as a lever to slide the new belt in.

How to change a alternator belt plus a power steering and air conditioner belt?

i have a 1994 kh ford laser and 1.6 carb and need to change the belts and i do not know how to take the tension off the power steering/ air conditioner belt|||On the power steering directly below the pulley and to the front of the car is the tension screw for the air conditioning and power steering belt. Approximately 2 inches back from that screw is the locking nut for the tension screw, this one is tricky to get to as the pulley may be in the road. Loosen this nut and that will allow you to loosen the tension on the belt.|||On one of the pulleys you put a 18m socket (long socket) and there%26#039;s a Bolt on the pulley just turn it one way or another and that will relieve the tension,

How often should the Alternator Belt and the Timing Belt be changed?

I have a Toyota Corolla 2004 LE edition. In order not to run into problems, how often should I get the Alternator and Timing Belt changed? Every 5 years? I know this seems like a very obselete question, but I want to make sure my car is in good shape. It currently has 42,290 miles on it and it%26#039;s 3 years old.|||Timing belts are 80k-100k miles depending on driving conditions.

Alternator Belt ....???

Toyota I can only assume is like Nissan, Honda, %26amp; VW in that they check belts and hoses as part of their maintenance every 10k miles. Those would be changed as needed but at 42,290k miles your car would have gone through a lot if it already needs these items changed but every car has its kwirks.|||The recommended time to change your timing belt is every 60,000 miles. If you wait until it breaks, you will be replacing an engine instead. Since replacing the timing belt entails remove all of the other belts first, it would be a great time to replace the accessory belts at the same time. Rack time is expensive.|||Do you have the 4 or 6?

A good way to tell is look at it, if it has small cracks or glazing it needs to be replaced. The cracks will be in the V side not the smooth side.

If you have a 4 cyl then you have a timing chain, the V6 has a belt, if it breaks there is no motor damage that is not a interference motor.|||if you have a 4 cylinder engine you have a serpentine belt and it should be changed about every 50k or as needed, and 4 cyl. has a timing chain not a belt. if you have a v6 then you have two drive belts that should be changed 50k or as needed, and the timing belt should be changed every 90k or as needed.|||Once a year|||Starting in 1998, Corollas went to a timing CHAIN. Theoretically, you should never have to change it,

The accessory belt (serpentine) should be inspected every oil change to be safe and changed when cracks appear.|||They dont make a 6 cyl corolla, and corolla%26#039;s use a timing chain from 98 on up.|||The local Toyota shop recommends changing the timing belt every 60k in hot climates like Texas. The timing belt (not to be confused with the alternator/water pump/compressor belt) is covered and thus is not readibly viewable. If the timing belt breaks, all the valves are bent in a second and the engine has to be rebuilt. Is is about a $3000 job vs. a $100 belt.|||omg seems like no one read the instruction booklet

there is a part on the book talking to mantenience in that part will tell you when you have change it and corrolla dont use timing belt, they use timming chain that you never need to change( in 10years will stretch only 3/16 inch) then change it

for the alt belt look for some scratchs and loose parts, or cracks if you look one of these then you have to change it

thanks!|||just google for %26quot;bimmer forums%26quot; or similar items. There are a bunch out there and very helpful. I do know those engines do have a certain technique to replacing them, but most BMW%26#039;s are fairly simple. (I am not sure of the exact proceedures for a z3) They are just very different from US cars.|||Ok , first its not the timing belt... your car has an auxillary belt driven alternator. Its not that difficult to do, just find the belt tensioner, loosen it and that should give you enough slack to pull it out. Beyond that I would suggest going to a parts house and buy a haynes or chilton%26#039;s manual for your car. These will help you do almost anything you want to do to your car. hope this helps....good luck.
