Why might my car's alternator belt overcharge?

The garage say that the alternator belt in my car has been overcharging, and as a result has knackered the battery. However the alternator belt has been changed in the last 3 years, by the car's previous owner.

Could the problem be something else, causing the alternator to overcharge? Or is it just wear and tear. I think I remember reading in the car's history that the alternator belt had also been adjusted at some point.

The car is a 1998 renault Laguna, which apparently are known for having electrical problems.

Also should I get the garage to replace the belt and battery for a quote of 拢120, or just get a useful but non-mechanic man to do it?

Thanks!

there's no possible way a belt can make one over charge, its possible though its time for another alternator they can last a few months or a few years,or go out a few day after they have ben replaced,so even though it was replaced a long time ago that doesn't mean its good now, anyone can replace an alternator or a battery, but its better to let a shop do it if you can, this way you might get some kind of a warranty with it,good luck.

it would not be the belt, its the alternator that's gone
The belt cannot cause the battery to over charge. It can cause the alternator to not charge the battery, if it was missing, or undercharge if it was slipping.
The alternator belt ( by itself ) can not overcharge , if there is a problem overcharging , there is something wrong with the alternator itself.

More like it is the voltage regulator ( device for controlling the output voltage and current of the alternator )

I would take the car to another mechanic. The belt is either good or bad and that is all.
I am sorry, belt will never over charge, it is your alternator over charging the battery. It is due to many problems in your alternator. The contact carbon brush may be Oren out. Your alternator body may be grounded, the MAGNETIC armature may be faulty. The alternator bearing may be oren out. 'If the battery low charging, I can say it is due to the lose fit of alternator belt. Your problem is with the alternator, not with the belt. If the belt is not changed from lost 3 years, it is better to change immediately. Just overhaul the Alternate with the replacement of belt. Have a good riding,
