I want to replace my alternator on my vauxhall astra if i remove the belt does it interfere with the timing?

I am wondering if i changed the alternator my self trying to save costs,when the belt is removed has it got any relation to the timing sequence.

Timing belt and alternator belts are different items.



Just make sure if you do it yourself that when replacing the new belt, you get the tension correct.

Too loose and it may slip, too tight and it will damge the bearings in the alternator.

Rough guide is to find the centre of the longest run between pulleys and the belt should move about 10mm up and down ( 5 up, 5 down so ten in total )

Your timing belt is internal connected to your cam shaft. the alternator is a external bolt on and used the same belt as the water pump, a/c and power steering pump, so no it is a different belt and will not change your timing.

the alternator has its own belt so no it wont affect the timing at all the timing belt is hidden away behind a plastic cover on the left hand side of engine the alternator is tensioned on a sliding bracket with a nut and bolt easy enough to see look at the engine from underneath the front bumper support the vehicle with axle stands for your safety

No, not at all. Don't tighten it like a guitar string, it should have about half an inch of play on it's longest run. Don't lever against anything fragile when tensioning the belt either. The handle of a wooden hammer is less likely to cause damage when used as a lever than a metal bar or a crow bar. Many have tensioning bolts these days, some just bolt up while you tension it yourself..
