How to change a Serpentine Belt (93 Olds Cutlass)?

I'm having a hell of a time trying to replace the serpentine belt on my 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera (6 Cylinder 3.3 liter).

Turns out my belt was worn out so my brother and I went to replace it. Problem is, we can't lift the tension pulley with a crowbar. We got so frustrated with the tension pulley that we just cut the old belt off. We were told the easiest way was to use a crowbar to lift the tension pulley and slide the belt on and off, that's worked on other cars in the family but not this one.

The tension pulley won't move an inch. We got the new belt on everything except the alternator and decided to pull up on the belt and (to our surprise) lifted the tension pulley just fine but now we can't use the crowbar to keep the pulley up long enough to slip the belt on the alternator.

We have to be doing something wrong and we don't want to lose any fingers with this flimsy system we're using now.

Any gear heads out there? Please help.
How to change a Serpentine Belt (93 Olds Cutlass)?
You need what is called a Serpentine Belt Removal tool. Not a Crow Bar! These tools are usually free of charge with a deposit at your local auto parts store. They have the specific fittings and extensions that will work with your tension pulley that are necessary to move it without damaging you or your motor.

I've used them many times and in fact have purchased one for myself because of its ease of use. Once you have this tool you can pretty much change any serpentine belt in about 5 minutes.

May be wrong...but if I remember right. The idler pulley is fixed. and the tension adjustment is done with an adjuster bolt on the alternator. But it could have actually been on the back of the idler pulley. Loosen the center nut on the pulley and turn the adjuster bolt to move it up or down.

It's been awhile.
Your tensioner might have a small square hole in it somewhere. Insert either a 3/8%26quot; or 1/2%26quot; ratchet into that hole, whichever fits. The tensioner should move relatively easily.

As for how to reinstall the belt, I would find a different pulley than the alternator to be the last one to put the belt on. Reason being- the alternator has that extra little lip you have to pull the belt over. Usually the idler pulley is flat and is much easier to scoot that belt onto than the alternator.
If you moved it up but cant keep it up with a crow bar get a ring spanner on to the bolt and use that to leaver it up.Its virtually the same as a commodore engine

How to change air condition and alternator belts on 98 dodge neon?

BPSKI is wrong. The 98 has two belts regardless if it is a DOHC engine or a SOHC engine. You first need to take off the power steering belt, there is a ideler pulley that you can release tension on and that belt will come off. Then loosen the alternator and that belt will come off. Reverse the process and bam done..

It only has 1 belt that's called a serpentine belt it turns all the pulleys you can purchase a repair manual at auto parts like auto zone depending what part of the country you live

Corolla 96 Timing Belt queries.?

Hi, I have a Corolla 96 milege 85000. I went to EZLube to get the oil change and the mechanic told me that the timing belt needed to be changed and will cost $200. He changed three belts(engine, alternator and something else) within 15 minutes without opening anything and from outside. I have read somewhere that changing the timing belt takes lot of time and someting over the engine needs to be opened and also it costs a lot around $500-600. I am worrying whether he has done the right thing or it was not changing the timing belt but something else. Thanks in advance for your help.

1990 Mazda 626 Auto doesnt want to start?

I probably won't get the chance to answer your question, but others would like more information:

Does your engine try to start?

Do you just hear a %26quot;clicking sound%26quot; when you turn the key?

Are you sure that you put the plug wires back on to the correct spark plug?

I once had a Navy Captain call me with a problem on his car. When I got there he said that he had sprayed the carburator with cleaner, and also his plugs.(?). I asked him if he put the wires back on the correct plug (4 cylinder) and he asked what I meant. Anyway, he thought that the sprark plug wires were there just to keep the plugs dry.

  • How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 97 chevy cavilier?

I am changing the alternator on a 97 Chev Cavilier. Basically which pulley is the tension pulley and what is procedure for releasing it.
How do I losen the serpentine belt on a 97 chevy cavilier?
There should be a pulley bracket with a square hole in it.

The square hole is where you put a ratchet or breakover bar.

Then you can pull or push on the tensioner pulley to take the tension off the belt.

Some tensioners you can just put a wrench on the screw that holds the pulley on the bracket.

If there is a square hole in the bracket...use the square hole.

Note:sometimes the square hole is on the backside of the bracket.

I just have to know how the hell do you think you can change an alternator if you cant even find the belt tensioner. How do you know what the alternator is? Good luck
There's always some way to get a wrench on the tensioner. Then you just have to turn it to loosen it while you slip the belt off. It can be fun trying to do it yourself.
Dave is right. this is one of the hardest belt i have done, you must get the belt on the engine pulley first and then go to the other pulleys.

    CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?

My alternator just died on my 2003 Vette. The past couple of days it has rained pretty hard here in southern california. My battery was diminishing little by little this past month and today it finally died while at the gas station.

I don't have the time or desire to take it into the shop let alone I don't want to pay out cash for something I can do myself. I am mechanically inclined and know how to turn wrenches the only problem im running into is i've never removed a serpentine belt on a corvette. I've had it for a little over 2years. Being late on a sunday, my resources were limited. Can someone walk me through the removal of the serpentine belt so that I can remove the alternator. I would really appreciated it.

your gonna love this belt system. locate tensioner, remove tension.that simple.just start looking, its an idler pulley with a springloaded arm.
    CHANGING OUT ALTERNATOR 03 VETTE?
first off should be 1/2 socket/wrench, grad a breaker bar your gonna need it. (although not to hard without, will make it a lot easier on you), the tensioner is going to be located below the alternator but above the crankshaft, bolt will rotate clockwise to release the tension. and you should be set to go...a little word of advice, i dont know how often you use the vehicle, or how hard you drive it, but if your getting around 10,000 might be just as easy to replace it while you have it off?

Does any one know how to replace the alternator on a 1993 Camry V6?

I'm looking for some help on replacing the alternator on my 1993 Camry. It's a V6, if that makes a difference. I never changed an alternator this is new to me. I really don't feel like caughing up all that money to my mechanic when I can change it myself (and learn something new). I pretty much understand that its a bolt on piece. But how do I get the belt off and on? Do I have to put it back in a certain way? I'd appreciate any help anyone may have. Especially detailed step by step directions. If you've got pictures even better...I'll take it!!!! Thanks!
